RAY SILKMAN - SOUL SERENADER
Ray Silkman has been touted as one of the best Sax Men in the business. Emerging from humble beginnings, Ray has persevered through the hard times, and surfaced to become a “viable force” in the music industry.
When Ray began playing the saxophone at the age of 12, it was in an effort to feel a connection with the father that he never knew. His immeasurable love for the craft inspired him to practice daily and achieve 1st-Chair ranking in Middle School as well as throughout college.
Growing up in a struggling household, he found his greatest inspiration to be his mother who told him "You can do anything that you put your mind to!" Silkman moved to Chicago shortly after her death, only to find himself homeless, alone, robbed and abandoned by the very persons who brought him here.
After months on the streets playing in subways and street corners, his first break was a fashion show entitled “OGGI”, interpreted appropriately, "Live for the Day". Other opportunities quickly followed including a principle role in a recurring Chicago HMO commercial.
Since those lonely and cold days performing on street corners, Ray Silkman has come to perform at countless clubs, festivals and special events in and around the Chicagoland area. These include venues such as Chicago's United Center, Donald E Stevens Convention Center, Poplar Creek and virtually every major jazz club in Chicago over the past 17 years. He has also had the honor and privilege of performing at President Barack Obama's 2008 inaugural ball.
Independently, Ray has released Five (5) CDs, including his signature work Sound Check, which features the hit single "So Saxual". Sound Check, has received national and international acclaim as an epic work, producing multiple hit songs still receiving airplay on public and NIC radio stations across the US. Jazz FM in Europe features many of Ray's tracks on their evening jazz show. "So Saxual" continues to receive major airplay here in the States.
Silkman has opened for jazz greats such as David Sanborn, Kenny G, George Benson, Keiko Matsui, Tom Scott and the late great Art Porter. Other venues throughout the country: The Detroit Opera House, Los Angeles Convention Center, Walt Disney's Pleasure Island and The Hilton Hotel in Niagara Falls. He has received numerous awards and honors including Midwest Magazine's Artist of the Year 2005 and the Chicago Jazz Legends Award 2010.
Silkman's signature sound has been described as “incomparable” by the late great Benny Carter who stated "This young man is sure to go places, I can feel his music." This soul serenader has an undeniable command of his instrument, and a style that’s unique and so soothing to the ear, you can hear his soul pouring through his sax." The Sun Times describes: "Silkman's sound is hypnotic to say the least!"
as well as Heartbeat, Stepper's Serenade, Sound Check and A View of Love are all available on CDbaby and iTunes exclusively.
There’s been a resurgence of popularity for the CD Sound Check …in light of signing his new protégé, Corey Raé, to the SILKSCREEN label. It has drawn more attention to the tunes on Sound CheckCD, whichbrought it back into rotation on WDCB 90.9 FM Radio!
The SILKSCREEN label signed this fresh new artist, Corey Raé to an exclusive management and production contract early 2014. Corey, a tremendous discovery under the direction of Silkman’s talents, will seek new heights in their new CD, set to be released next Spring of 2015.
Silkman has expanded his talent to producing shows such as the “Jospel” benefit concert for Resurrection Church (Jospel II coming soon), which moves you with a mixture of Jazz and Gospel! Also, producing his 1st Annual Holiday Concert last year, with plans are to spice up the holidays again in 2014. These will showcase talented youth through the efforts of Silkman’s “True Gifts Foundation”, uplifting young up-and-coming artists in the community.
In a recent interview with Musician, Songwriter and Producer Maurice Starr of MAURICE STARR ENTERTAINMENT, Silkman and his protégé Corey Rae were complimented on how great they are as Starr mentioned, “They Deserve to make it!” Starr is best known for pop and soul bands such as Con Funk Shun, New Edition, and the New Kids on the Block.
As well, Starr commented about Silkman’s sax-playing, stating, “This brother is Amazing on that saxophone”; and he’s “Never seen a guy play a sax like that since Junior Walker.”
Silkman is poised to continue his contribution to contemporary jazz with his fusion of R&B that’s distinct from any other, which is evident in the new release of As I Am, Corey Rae’s debut CD.
